Dear Attorney General,
I am writing to express my concern for the arbitrary detention and torture of Mohammed Adam (17) and Mohammed al-Fatih (18). They were violently arrested on 14 January 2022 as they were leaving a hospital in eastern Khartoum. Adam was seeking treatment for a gunshot wound in his leg sustained the previous day during a protest demanding an end to the army’s coup since 25 October 2021. Their arrest is believed, although not confirmed, to be in connection to the killing of a Police Brigadier during the 13 January protests. For the first three weeks of their detention, they were held incommunicado. Adam has not been granted access to a doctor or a lawyer. Both teenagers have allegedly been tortured by police and security agents in custody.
Unless they are charged with an internationally recognisable criminal offence and remanded by an independent court, I urge you to immediately release Adam and Al-Fatih. In the meantime, they must be protected from further torture and ill-treatment, and granted regular access to their lawyers, families, and medical treatment. The reports of their torture must also be immediately investigated, independently and efficiently.
I am kindly awaiting your reply.
Yours sincerely,
